[Source: Andrew Johnson, Arizona Republic] — The Arizona Club, the venerable Phoenix dining club whose members include movers and shakers in the Valley’s business community, may close its doors at the top of Chase Tower. The private club’s finances have been hit hard by the economic downturn and it is looking for ways to cut costs while maintaining a presence in the community. Options include merging with another local private-dining club and ceasing operations at its current headquarters on the 37th and 38th floors of Chase Tower, 201 N. Central Ave. in downtown Phoenix.
The club currently is planning to partner with University Club of Phoenix, another local private dining club, but details still are being worked out. “We’ve had active board discussions about the inability in this tough economy to keep the club afloat and continue the engagement of members,” said local businessman and current club President A.J. Lindemann. No final decision has been made about what to do with its space at Chase Tower, but the group has notified organizations that hold events there that it is not booking events for after September, Lindemann said.
The Arizona Club’s history dates to the formation of the Phoenix Social Club and the Maricopa Club in the 1890s, according to its Web site. The two groups merged in 1906, forming the Arizona Club, and over the years, its membership has waxed and waned.
