[Source: Arizona Republic] — Lots of community celebrations are planned for Metro light rail’s grand opening day Dec. 27. At each of the 28 Metro stations in Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa, there will be something of interest, but large-scale, themed celebrations are planned at nine stops. Here is the current station celebration lineup with the location, its party theme, and names of the sponsors:
- 19th Avenue and Montebello – “A Better Tomorrow Starts Today” is the theme. Sponsored by APS, it will celebrate Phoenix’s diversity through food, music, and family activities.
- Thomas Road and Central Avenue – “Health and Wellness” is the theme. Sponsored by St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, it will feature entertainment and educational activities designed to help safeguard and improve your health.
- Encanto Boulevard and Central Avenue – “Arts and Culture” is the theme. Sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, it will feature music, performance art and visual art.
- Third Street between Jefferson and Washington Street – “Phoenix Rising” is the theme. Sponsored by CityScape, it will spotlight what’s new and happening in downtown Phoenix. There will be music, street performers, and family activities. This party also will celebrate the new Phoenix Convention Center.
- 44th Street and Washington Street – “Sky Harbor Community” is the theme. Sponsored by Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, those attending will learn how Metro riders, beginning Dec. 29, can connect to the airport.
- Priest Drive and Washington Street – “Papago Park Celebration” is the theme. Sponsored by SRP, it will focus on the neighboring destinations, including the Phoenix Zoo and Desert Botanical Garden.
- Mill Avenue and Third Street – “Mill Avenue Experience” is the theme. Sponsored by Hayden Ferry, it will focus on Mill Avenue and its culture, entertainment, and dining options.
- Fifth Street and Veterans Way – “Destination Tempe” is the theme. Sponsored by Gray Development, Avenue Communities and aloft Tempe, it will focus on the variety of thing to do in Tempe and will have a festival booth, a farmers market, archaeology displays and a kids area. This celebration will also serve as the opening for the new Tempe Transportation Center.
- Sycamore and Main Street – “It All Starts Here” is the theme. Sponsored by SRP, it will celebrate Mesa’s future with music, food, and family fun, including a kids zone and a classic-car show.
The parties will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with free train rides offered from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Free rides will continue through Dec. 31. Free bus shuttles also will be provided on Saturday and Sunday for those who want another way to get back to their origination point.
