You don’t want to be a light rail accident, right?

METRO light rail has begun vehicle testing on the roadways, right now on a test track from 24th St. and Washington to just east of Mill Ave.  The test track or “zone” will next expand to the Mesa end of line at Main St. and Sycamore all the way to Central Ave. and McDowell Rd. by end of June/first of July 2008.  By early fall, testing will have expanded throughout the full 20-mile alignment.  Testing will run right up until the grand opening weekend of December 27–28, 2008; official revenue service begins December 29.

How to be safe: To drive, bike, or walk safely around the light rail system, you must be sure to be more aware and follow all traffic signals.  A benefit of light rail is that it is quiet, which will require you to pay close attention to the train’s bells and flashing headlights.  The train will signal every time it begins to move.  METRO encourages you to pay attention to these basic safety tips:

  • Light rail is quiet; always listen for bells and look for flashing train headlights.
  • Pedestrians: use the crosswalk and obey all signals.
  • Never drive, bike, walk, or skateboard in the track way.
  • Obey the traffic signals; turn only with a green arrow.

These safety and security measures have been integrated into the system to protect passengers:

  • Cameras on all trains, stations and park-n-ride lots.
  • Emergency call boxes at all stations and park-n-ride lots.
  • Audible and visual messaging on the trains and stations.
  • Passenger intercom ability on the trains.
  • Roving security personnel on the trains, stations, and park-n-ride lots.
