Indy columnist rags on downtown Phoenix

Indianapolis Star sports writer, Bob Kravitz, offers his opinion about downtown Phoenix in a May 16, 2008 column about what U.S. city should get to stage the 2012 NFL Super Bowl.

“Glendale, Ariz. — First, it just had one last year, so that should eliminate this bid immediately.  The bigger issue is this: Last year’s Super Bowl in Phoenix stunk.  And worse.  Downtown Phoenix was an absolute ghost town.  I’ve been to more than 20 Super Bowls, and have never experienced such a lack of atmosphere and excitement.  Would it be different if the whole thing was centered around Glendale, the Phoenix suburb that houses the stadium?  Maybe.  But again, it blew it last year.  And Glendale, it turns out, lost money on the event. It needs to wait its turn.”
