According to the State Historic Preservation Office, much of the physical/architectural integrity of the Sun Merc Building exists. There will be a significant loss of original fabric if the proposed “facadomy” takes place. Therefore, the building will become ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places if the project proceeds.
In the photo above, taken on January 6 by an individual who just happened to be at the right place at the right time, project architects examine the building to discuss how to construct the 11-story tower over the Sun Merc by demolishing the roof and floor and salvaging the north facade to gain access for the project’s foundation and lower floor construction (see drawing above).
