Delux? Thats REALLY stretching the definitions of "Downtown". At least Gallo Blanco is in Central Phoenix though not really Downtown. We really need to do a better job pounding it into the general Phoenicians mind about where is and isn't Downtown, ah well.

Thanks for the excellent recommendations, especially the list in 6 (Carly's is particularly good, though I would add Hanny's to that group as well). Oh, and good to know about El Portal; I haven't tried it yet, and now I don't know that I ever will.

The Wednesday version of the farmers' market leaves a lot to be desired though, almost to the point of not being worthwhile. 'Small' and 'low-key' would be nice, but in this case they translate too: 'almost devoid of options.'

I'm sure a ton of students, including me, would rather go to Fair Trade or Royal, but the Starbuck's has the advantage of accepting ASU's M&G dollars, making it a default better value for most of us. On the plus side, it's staffed by downtown students so it's actually one of the friendliest and most relaxed Starbuck's locations I've ever visited.

This is good news. I'm in LA right now and was in Portland during the Suns-Blazers playoff series. The street food culture in both cities was terrific. The City of Phoenix's M.O. needs to go from "CYA" to "how can we make Phoenix awesome?"

I can understand the worry about street food leaking into NIMBY neighborhoods that might freak out, but the City needs to figure out a way to allow street food along the Capitol Mall and in Central Phoenix from the tracks to Missouri and between the 7s at least.

There seems to be plenty of life there now; just not the type that attracts families. Not to belittle the people who choose to live free, but it's not the sort of thing that makes for a pleasant stroll from the Japanese Garden to the Library.

That sucks that Phoenix is losing more bus service. Of course there's no signs with the route for the DASH, and good luck ever flagging one down. Those drivers drive fast, as if it's a chore they'd rather not be doing.

It's not green if it continues the status quo of low-density, car-dependant cities, which much of ours do. Historic Preservation is best used on old warehouses and such that can be converted to high-density living, for example. Our "historic" neighborhoods of 8000 sqft lots for a single home are in no way a sustainable green development.
