WABAC Machine: In 2000, fire damages historic downtown church

On Palm Sunday, 2000 fire destroyed the interior of Phoenix’s oldest Hispanic church, Immaculate Heart of Mary, 909 E. Washington Street.   Two years later, Catholic Bishop Thomas O’Brien celebrated a special Mass to rededicate the newly-renovated church.  Built in 1928, the ediface is listed on the city’s historic register.
